Bad design – dangerous to your camera, April 18, 2012

I bought this about a year ago and used it extensively during a safari vacation to Africa. While I love the idea of a sniper-style strap, I would have given then a 3-star rating to this based on a couple of shortcomings: (1) the screw-in plate that connects the strap to the camera through the tripod hole is generically sized. I used this with a Panasonic GH2 DSLR camera and on that camera, I could not remove the battery without unscrewing the plate. At that point, I wished that they made the plate in a couple of sizes to match with your camera design, (2) the padded shoulder part kept on slipping. However, based on my experience last week, I would give them only 1 star. The problem is that the plate is attached to the strap via a metallic hook. This hook is inserted into a metal ring and is supposed to be secure. However, the metal must have worn out that the hook just came out from the ring, and the camera fell to the floor! Luckily, I had damage only to the filter. But I could have been on a height and lost my camera altogether. Given that I have one of the lightest DSLR’s around while this strap is supposed to work with much heavier DSLR’s, I feel that this is a badly designed strap. I have seen others where instead of a screw-in plate, there’s a screw-in disk that avoids the hook and ring issue that this strap has (and also solves the battery cover problem). If you care about your camera worth hundreds if not a few thousands, use a better strap. This ain’t it.

Must use tripod mount on Nikon D50 for strap attachment, June 23, 2011

From the images on the website, the product appears to be capable of attaching to the clips on the left and right sides of the camera unit. This is not so, you must screw the included clip into the tripod mount, then attach the strap’s connector. This method forces the camera to face downward when the strap is worn upon the neck. If you are using a large lens, this could quickly become bothersome.
This product was purchased solely to replace the manufacture’s neck strap that commonly would slip and release the camera. Although awkward in it’s method of attachment, I see no way another accidental drop of the camera is possible with the Oxford Neck strap.

Mount constantly comes loose and now I have broken equipment, April 30, 2012

This strap does not stay securely mounted to the camera. I would constantly have to tighten it. It became so loose a couple of times that my camera came off in my hands… thank god I was holding it when this happened, but at this weekend’s wedding it finally happened, despite tightening it three times that evening, it came loose and my camera with flash mounted went crashing down onto concrete as I was walking to the reception. My $500 flash broke off of its mount and now I’m going to have to replace it due to this strap. Please pass on this strap and buy the real rapid strap… spending $70 for the name brand is still cheaper than replacing a flash or even worse, your camera body and lens.
