Canon EOS 5D

The Fotodiox MD/MC-EOS Lens adapter allows you to place your favorite Minolta MD, MC Rokkor mount lens on your Canon EOS camera body. This adapter gives you the ability to use your irreplaceable prime lens and saves you the cost of purchasing new lenses. The adapters are precision made to insure the perfect fit. The lens will fit physically, but the automatic diaphragm, auto-focusing, and other functions will not operate correctly while using this adapter. In this case, “stop-down mode” will need to be used when metering, since the lens does not have the ability to have its aperture controlled by the camera body. You can shoot in manual or aperture priority mode. Infinity focusing is guaranteed.

This is the best adapter I’ve ever owned for any type of camera. It lets me use my old Minolta MD Rokkor lenses on my Canon Eos 5D MkII. There are no problems with the adapter interfering with the camera’s functions. The adapter goes on like a Canon lens, and the Minolta lens goes on the adapter like it would on a Minolta camera. There is a pin on the left (as you face the camera) of the adapter that you press to remove the lens. To remove the adapter, you use the camera’s lens release button on the right. The aperture becomes manual, which means it stays at the set aperture before, during and after the exposure. That’s not a problem at all, with the Canon’s bright viewfinder. I keep the lens at F/8 most of the time, and it’s not at all dim, except in the shade.

This Fotodiox adapter has a compensating lens in the rear, which makes up for the shorter flange distance in Canon cameras. You can remove it for macrophotography.

Using this adapter is a very inexpensive way to use different focal length Minolta lenses on a Canon body, avoiding the way of having to purchase new lenses for your camera. Because of this, I recommend it and rate it highly.

I just returned the one that i bought and plan on buying something similar from a different manufacturer. From what I can only deduce as a tooling error, some of these adapters do not allow for manual apature adjustment, rendering them pretty much useless. Chances are that if you get a bad one and return it for another, it will be fine but I don’t want to waste that much time.

    Terrible for low-light photography, June 14, 2012

At first I was really excited about being able to adapt my Minolta MD lenses for use on my Canon 7D, but my excitement quickly faded when I started to review my photos with added detail. The photos I took with my MD 50mm fully-open at f1,7 came out ghostly and unusable, due to the corrective element (infinity glass). The aperture of the infinity glass is about f2,0 or maybe f2,8 which gives any photos with an aperture more open than the corrective element ghostly and hazy. The only use I get out of this adaptor now is in daylight shooting. The infinity glass also magnifies a lens by x1.4, adding that to an ASP-C sensor crop of x1.6, it renders a lot of lenses unusable.

If you’re a Canon owner looking for cheaper lens alternatives, then go for a lens mount that converts directly to an EOS mount, like Nikon FD, which converts directly with only a contacts adaptor and doesn’t require a corrective element for focusing.
