Hifiman He-4 Headphones

Schiit Audio

HE-4 is the single end version of famous hifiman HE-5LE headphones: very similar sound signature. Because HE-4 only have 50% magnet in HE-5LE, it is much lighter (350g). HE-4 will beat any headphones below 0.

HE-4 require a powerful headphone amplifier to drive.

Purchase with caution!, March 12, 2012

First of all, let me reiterate what has been said over and over… to push these you need POWER! I don’t know if you can over do this. I tried playing on my iPod and computer directly to see what would come out. Sound worse than blown iPod buds or a home kit made transistor radio. Tried on my headphone jack of my home unit, a Harman Kardon AVR-3600… sound almost no better!
At this point I was seriously wondering if I had made the mistake of my life or got a bad pair. So I put them back in the box (a nice box by the way) and contemplated my expensive purchase.
I have owned several other high end ear-canal type earphones (Etymotic to more recently ThinkSound ms01′s with enough stops in between to more than pay for these instead) for travel and Klipsch and Bose home speakers so did not consider myself new to great sounding audio.
The next day the second part of my order arrived, a Schiit Asgard headphone amp. I plugged my iPod into the Asgard and the Hifiman’s into the Asgard and turned on some of my favorite tunes. I was blown away. I have never heard better sound anywhere. Not on expensive (beyond my means) set ups in HiFi shops, not even live. No where.
Plugged into my laptop (which I must assume has better DAC capability) using the same 3.5mm to RCA cable they were even better! I rushed to put on a favorite record and hook them straight to my record player (has a built in phono pre-amp) and they improved yet again!
I think with the right amp and the right source these can top any speaker at any price.
I have even tried listening to music I know without a doubt I hate… music that makes me want to punch something I hate it so much… And I enjoyed even that through these headphones. They are just that good.
Perfect, no. I’m sure for more money you could do even better. But at what I thought was an already substantial price ($700 with the amp) they are dollar for dollar the best “feeling” sound value I’ve ever purchased.
My one complaint would be the way the ear pads “connect” to them. There has to be a better way to do this than tabs that just slip in at four corners. But they are very comfortable when worn.
I’ve also plugged in every other headphone I can get my hands on to the Asgard and it improves them no matter how much I liked them before as if they are a completely different thing. Nothing yet comes close to the Hifiman’s.
Just be aware that when you buy them you need a lot of power. The Asgard on full volume is still not even close to pushing them to what would be comfortable listening for a period of time with 50-75% volume being almost unendingly enjoyable. Do not expect to run these without an amp and begin to like them. Also be aware that all other headphones, speakers, your car, live performances… life in general… may start to sound blah in comparison.

I little background on headphones/earbuds I have owned or used.

    Triplefi10
    Sennheiser HD595
    DenonAHD 2000
    Denon AHD5000
    All of the Monster Turbines.
    Etc…

I bought the Hifiman HE4 headphones from a B&M and I absolutely love these headphones. I was a little disappointed with the Sennheiser HD595 as i thought they sounded a little thin and weak. The Denon headphones sounded really rich and nice but they were both a little on the heavy side.
These HE4′s are very crisp, clean, precise and quick. They cover a wide range of music and are not bass heavy or bass weak. I think they found the right balance. They are really comfortable and I can wear them for hours. The build quality is really nice as well.

These headphones need power so make sure you are using some type of amplifier.
