This dongle is intended to be used in combination with the iOS app to allow triggering of your camera from your iOS. There is a lot of negative reviews on the iOS app store simply for one thing “THE HDR functionality”. Unfortunately this is a common trend these days. Buyers have very unrealistic expectations from a product. The product is really good but it does not match those unrealistic expectations and here comes the negative reviews.
This is an audio based dongle that converts an audio file played through the iOS device into a trigger for the shutter on your camera. The iOS app provides really nice and different trigger functions. Some of them are of no use to me at all. But that doesn’t matter, as what I want does exist. It provides the full functionality of an “Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord” which I bought for $25 and I can’t use that as an intervalometer. This dongle with the iOS app is an amazing intervalometer. There is no built-in intervalometer in my D90. With triggertrap I was able to take 6 hours worth of star trail shots without a hitch using my iPad and my camera. Before I had to connect the camera to my laptop and that was a really complicated setup.
The app is still at version 1. It has some bugs, but the developers have been active at updating it. The last bug fix solved a lot of issues I had. I am looking for future releases.
This dongle with the iOS app cost me less than $30 in total. If you expect to pay this small price and have your $500 DSLR perform the same tricks of a $5000 then you better look else where. But if you are looking for a remote trigger and decent intervalometer for star trails and fast sequence movies, then this dongle will deliver as long as you have an iOS device.
you can check the developer website for the various trigger functions. I only use time-lapse.

This has nothing to do with the App or the Dongle; they both work great, but using your mobile device as a trigger is just a short term solution.

On several occasions I tried to use my phone out on a hike, at the beach, or on the patio my battery would be nearly drained after only a half hour timelapse.

Granted there are factors like shooting intervals, screen brightness, and network/cellar battery drain that are contributing factors.

I would recommend this as an introduction to time-lapse and using it prior to investing in hundreds of dollars in ND filters, cables, and an intervalometer.

Along with the mobile app and other required cable this is a great product to use your iOS device to control your camera and get loads of added functionality that would normally require many different pieces of hardware. I’m still I’m the early days of using this with my 5d MkII but so far it’s working very well. I would recommend this product.
