Look closely at this AV Receiver, December 19, 2012

I picked this AVR after much research online and at audio specialty stores. I was open to any reputable brand that met basic home theater receiver needs. I was leaning toward the Onkyo TX-NR515 because of the supposed reputation and the myriad of features for a seemingly ridiculously low price. So I read all the Amazon reviews and every thing online I could find. Even though it appears there are firmware problems the deciding factor was talking to a salesperson at a top end audio store who told me when I looked at one in the store said he had one and wouldn’t buy it. This receiver was picked up for $279 at Costco. It is the same as the Yamaha RX-V473 only sold at big box vs. Best Buy etc.

Let me start by saying before you even hook it up, do yourself a favor and read the manual. Once you do the setup is in a logical progression and rather easy. The steps the manual takes you through will set the receiver up in my opinion exquisitely. I was able to use only HDMI cables for the TV and all the other inputs; Directv DVR, Blu Ray DVD, etc. HERE IS A workaround to connect to your network without having to buy the wireless adapter for $85-$100. If you have a Directv wireless connection to your network just plug an Ethernet cable to the receiver and the Directv wireless box and presto onto the network automatically and effortlessly.

My LED 240 HZ TV run from the receiver has never looked so good and the sound is like going from TV speakers to Home Theater. My previous receiver was a 7 year old Pioneer 5.1 receiver which was a wonderful workhorse but technology passed it by.

Once all was working and the speakers balanced and calibrated using the YPOA included setup which took all of 3-4 minutes I ran through the remaining setup items to fine tune a few settings and rename the HDMI inputs and tried all the different settings for the music and video and all I can say is I am wonderfully impressed and can’t believe what a bargain this AVR was. The remote if one takes the time to really look at it is intuitive and really easy to use all the functions. The setup menus project to your TV and a cave man could set this AVR up. The NET radio is awesome with every kind of music one can imagine and the menu is very PC like bookmarks etc.

So with the reputation of Yamaha and the ease of operation of the HTR-4065 one can really be pleased and satisfied in all respects.

Home Run 5.1 Network Receiver, December 18, 2012
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-4065 5.1 Channel 575-Watt AV Receiver with Apple AirPlay (Electronics)

In the Family room, the home theater system is used by everyone, so it has to be simple enough to be operated by everyone. Wife and kids included. This Yamaha fills the bill. Some receivers require an Electrical Engineering degree. Not this one.

The YPAO feature tuned the system for my speakers/room configuration. Just place the included mic in your seating area at head level and let the system do the tweaking. A tripod works great for this.

The sound is much improved over the old JVC receiver this replaced. Now the old receiver powers my vinyl & CD audio system in the basement. The kids are digging the vinyl records.

    Pros

    1) Very simple setup
    2) Amazing 5.1 sound – great auto-tweaking features – plenty of punch
    3) Minimal cabling needed (1 HDMI cable to TV for all inputs in receiver)
    4) Plenty of inputs (more HDMI than I’ll ever need)
    5) Pass-through (passes signals to TV even when receiver is off)
    6) 4K compatible – for when 4k TVs are the standard
    7) 3D compatible – for those who want 3D TV – not me
    8) Decent remote
    9) Lots of sound modes, including Dolby
    10) Operates cool (cooler than my less-powered JVC)
    11) Nice smartphone app
    12) Nice on-screen display (OSD) for tweaking the system using the TV display – works through HDMI, unlike other receivers who use composite for OSD

    Cons

    1) No Zone 2 option (only important if you require one)
    2) No WiFi (However, Ethernet cable works great)

Great switch from my Denon Receiver, November 30, 2012

This review is from: Yamaha HTR-4065 5.1 Channel 575-Watt AV Receiver with Apple AirPlay (Electronics)

I have long heard that Yamaha makes the best receivers and they where right. I have owned some of the best Denon receivers for the last 5 years and paid allot for them. First a 3808ci which was powerful but limited in technology and some would say over priced. They more recently a 2311ci receiver it was less money but dosnt have any feature the Yamaha has. I love this Yamaha receiver and the fact that it has an app for it is awesome. Its also blasts through its inputs way faster than denon and it also works great with network music and has a ton of internet channels. I love how well the app works and the remote is easy to program and easy for my wife to use. this reciever has alot of features that denon would charge thousands for. Yamaha knows how to keep up with the latest and greatest technology. Buy this reveiver you will not be disapointed.
